The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is accelerating its clean energy transition to meet the carbon reduction targets set under the Paris Climate Agreement. China is the largest foreign investor in ASEAN’s clean energy sector and has made significant contributions to the region’s green transformation, a regional online seminar highlighted.

Sharon Seah Li-Lian, a senior research fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore and coordinator of the ASEAN Studies and Climate Change Program, said China has come to the forefront of global climate leadership following the US withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement. Seah said that China’s environmentally friendly regulations and subsidies for renewable energy support economic growth and set an inspiring example for ASEAN countries. “For emerging ASEAN economies to learn from China’s experience will give them the confidence to continue the green transformation process,” he said.
