The German authorities plan to increase the level of combat readiness of their army in order to cope with old and new challenges. These changes will be the most radical military reform in 35 years.
This statement was made by German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, the Report reported, citing the Financial Times.
According to Pistorius, the aim of the reforms is to restructure the Bundeswehr (Germany’s armed forces) so that it is best prepared for defence in the event of war. The minister emphasised that “no one should have the thought of attacking NATO territory”.
He noted that conscription is a key element. In the coming weeks, the defence ministry will present a model for changes in this area. It is likely that Germany will adopt the Scandinavian model, as practised in Sweden, for example. This model means that military service would be voluntary and gender-neutral.
The reforms also envisage that cyber operations will be on the same level as land, naval and air forces, and that the four components of the Armed Forces will be led by a single operational command.
On 1 April, Armin Papperger, CEO of the German defence company Rheinmetall, expressed the view that the US would not help Europe in the event of a military threat.
