Vilnius agrees with the idea of taking a joint loan on behalf of the European Union for defence needs.

According to Report, Lithuanian Finance Minister Gintare Skaiste told journalists.

“Taking a joint loan for defence needs is a tool whose use should be discussed. We are open to such a discussion.”

According to the minister, this would be about the same as the joint procurement of vaccines during the coronavirus pandemic, when medicines were cheaper than they would be if each country bought them separately.

Skaiste believes that the community should give the European Investment Bank more powers. “A broader authorisation is needed. For example, this could be the allocation of sufficient amounts to finance the production of dual-use products,” he said.
