The European Union is set to unveil a new Arctic strategy this autumn, seeking to strengthen cooperation with its northern neighbours against the backdrop of the region’s growing geopolitical significance.
According to the European bureau of Report, this was announced in Nuuk (Greenland) by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at a joint press conference with the Prime Ministers of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, and Denmark, Mette Frederiksen.
As a concrete outcome of the new cooperation, von der Leyen cited the launch of a project to expand satellite capacity. She said that, from Tuesday, residents of remote settlements in northern Greenland will have faster and more reliable internet access, whilst similar improvements are expected in remote areas in the east from October.
Another priority will be hydropower. The EU intends to support the development of new hydroelectric power stations, which, according to von der Leyen, will enable Greenland to strengthen its energy independence and create the conditions for the development of sectors such as ‘green’ hydrogen production.
She also highlighted projects in the field of critical raw materials. The development of the Malmbjerg molybdenum deposit could become one of Greenland’s largest projects and generate up to €90 million in added value for the country each year, the Commission President stated. The EU is also funding the preparation of GreenRoc’s Amitsoq graphite project.
