The United States has the necessary means to produce enriched uranium. US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said, APA reported with reference to TASS.
“I believe we have the necessary tools to create a strategy for producing [enriched] uranium in the country to ensure our security,” the Energy Secretary said at a hearing of the US House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee. According to Granholm, the bill approved by the US Senate on Tuesday banning the import of enriched uranium from Russia will “create a reliable infrastructure” for uranium enrichment for US nuclear reactors. Granholm also assured lawmakers that the agency will report to Congress on the implementation of plans to increase the production of enriched uranium in the United States.
The US Senate on Tuesday unanimously approved a bill banning the import of enriched uranium from Russia, the bill had previously been approved by the House of Representatives. The document must now be signed by US President Joe Biden. The White House announced its support for the bill.
The bill provides for a ban on the import of Russian uranium into the United States 90 days after entry into force, with temporary exemptions until January 2028. The initiative thus allows the US Department of Energy, in coordination with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Treasury, to authorise the import of Russian uranium in quantities permitted by current US law. The document also obliges the Department of Energy to explore and present to Congress options for substituting uranium supplies from Russia.
