Washington may raise tariffs on imports from Canada and impose further trade restrictions.
According to Report, Bloomberg has reported this, citing a source in the White House.
According to the source, the US administration is considering the possibility of introducing new trade measures in response to Ottawa’s decision to impose retaliatory tariffs on US imports from 8 September.
Bloomberg warns that such a move could lead to a significant escalation of the trade conflict between the two countries.
Earlier, US trade negotiator Jamison Greer stated that Ottawa had rejected a bilateral trade deal which Washington considered favourable. Consequently, on 22 August, US tariffs of 50 per cent on imports of certain categories of Canadian goods came into force.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the suspension of trade negotiations with the US and announced Ottawa’s intention to impose retaliatory tariffs. These are due to come into force on 8 September.
Furthermore, US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian cars, car parts and steel from 1 January 2027.
