Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is on an official visit to France, called for the approval of the trade agreement signed between the European Union (EU) and the South American common market Mercosur.

Speaking at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, Lula said, “This agreement will be the best response our regions can give to the uncertainty created by the return of unilateralism and protectionism.” President Macron acknowledged that the agreement would be beneficial in many sectors, but pointed out that it posed a risk to the agricultural sector in European countries in particular. The EU and Mercosur (a South American trade bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia) reached a preliminary agreement on a comprehensive trade deal in 2019 and completed final negotiations in 2024.
