China Takes Steps to Strengthen Trilateral Links with Afghanistan and Pakistan

China, Afghanistan and Pakistan have agreed to extend the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to Afghanistan, launching a new round of cooperation to boost regional connectivity.

The consensus was reached at an informal trilateral foreign ministerial meeting in Beijing. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi hosted the meeting and welcomed Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaki. At the meeting, the ministers of the three countries applauded the progress made so far by the China-Afghanistan-Pakistan Trilateral Dialogue Mechanism and exchanged views on further exploring its potential and strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation and friendly relations. Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said the three countries are committed to enhancing political trust and maintaining good neighborly relations. He stressed that China supports Afghanistan and Pakistan to pursue development paths in accordance with their national conditions and safeguard their sovereignty, security and national dignity.
