China and the Netherlands reaffirmed their commitment to uphold multilateralism and protect the World Trade Organization (WTO)-centered global trading system. The commitment was expressed during talks between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp in Beijing.

During the talks, both sides emphasized the importance of rules-based open trade, a fair global business environment and the role of trade in global economic growth. Unilateralism, protectionism and power politics weaken the foundations of international trade, Wang said. China and the Netherlands agreed to strengthen dialogue, deepen practical cooperation in a wide range of fields and boost people-to-people exchanges. In this context, the two countries aim to steadily develop their open and pragmatic partnership based on comprehensive cooperation. “Despite changes in the international environment, China will maintain its policy of high-level opening-up,” Wang Yi said, inviting the Netherlands to further cooperate in areas such as clean energy, green development, artificial intelligence and the silver economy. Bilateral trade with the Netherlands, China’s second largest trading partner in the European Union, has exceeded 100 billion dollars for four consecutive years. Wang said he expects a fair, impartial and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies’ operations in the Netherlands.
