Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng stated that China does not want a trade war, but is not afraid of such a war. Emphasizing that trade talks between the US and China should be conducted on the basis of equality, mutual respect and reciprocity, Xie said unilateral tariffs have slowed global growth and created uncertainty in the markets.
Speaking at an open-door event at the Chinese Embassy in Washington on Saturday, Xie Feng said, “Tariffs do not help anyone. They hurt business, increase costs and make financial markets nervous,” Xie Feng said. In its first 100 days in office, US President Donald Trump’s administration has imposed a blanket 10 percent tariff on all foreign goods. While some countries were granted a 90-day exemption, this rate was increased to 145 percent on products imported from China. In response, China imposed a 125 percent tariff on US goods. Xie said, “China does not want a trade war, but it will not succumb to it either. We are not only defending our legitimate rights and interests, but also the international trade order,” Xie said. Trade is not a zero-sum game, the ambassador said, adding that barriers only block cooperation, not growth.
