Colombian President Abelardo de la Esprieya has proposed that the United States collaborate on modernising systems to counter unmanned aerial vehicles.
Report has reported this, citing the Telemundo television channel.
Speaking at a press conference following a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the president explained that the ‘21st-Century Patriot’ plan proposed to the Americans is aimed at modernising aircraft, radars, drones, helicopters, anti-drone systems, air defence, mobility, intelligence, cyber defence and special forces, as well as their maintenance and combat readiness.
According to Esprielia, modern threats require new capabilities to ensure security, which is why Colombia intends to work with the US to build the capacity to combat drug cartels and illegal armed groups.
He emphasised that Bogotá is prepared to invest its own funds, but that technological and financial assistance from Washington is necessary for a high-quality modernisation of its material and technical base.
