Elections to Kazakhstan’s new unicameral parliament, the Kurultai, will take place on Sunday 23 August. Seven political parties, having put forward 545 candidates, will compete for 145 parliamentary seats.
According to Report, citing Kazakhstan’s Central Election Commission, around 12.6 million citizens are eligible to vote. There are more than 10,000 polling stations across the country. Voting is also taking place at Kazakhstan’s diplomatic missions in 61 countries.
The elections are being held solely on the basis of party lists. Parties that secure at least 5 per cent of the vote will enter parliament. There is no minimum turnout threshold.
It should be noted that seven registered parties are taking part in the elections: ‘Amanat’, Respublica, the People’s Party of Kazakhstan, ‘Auyl’, ‘Ak Zhol’, the All-National Social Democratic Party and ‘Baytak’.
The voting process will be monitored by 777 international observers from 42 countries and 13 international organisations, including the OSCE, the CIS, the SCO and the Organisation of Turkic States.
Once the results have been finalised, the parties will form the new Kurultai. The first session of parliament is due to take place no later than 30 days after the results are published. The new parliament will also be responsible for participating in the formation of the government and agreeing on the candidate for Prime Minister.
