Japan expressed regret over the reimposition of U.N. sanctions on Iran following accusations of violations of the 2015 nuclear deal, urging continued dialogue. Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya stressed that Iran must never be allowed to develop nuclear weapons and emphasized the importance of diplomacy. Under the 2015 accord, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear activities in return for sanctions relief, but in 2018 President Donald Trump withdrew the U.S. from the deal and reinstated sanctions. Iran responded by expanding its nuclear program. In August, Britain, France, and Germany reported Iran’s significant non-compliance to the U.N. Security Council. A resolution to extend sanctions relief failed, leading to the automatic reimposition of sanctions.
