Askhat Khasenov, Chairman of the Board of Kazakhstan’s national oil and gas company ‘KazMunayGas’ (KMG), met with Frode Lønes, Head of TotalEnergies in Kazakhstan, to discuss bilateral cooperation.
According to KMG, the meeting focused primarily on cooperation in the renewable energy sector, including the joint ‘Mirny’ project to build a 1 GW wind farm in the Zhambyl region of Kazakhstan. The parties noted that the basic design has already been prepared, and the development of detailed engineering documentation is nearing completion.
“At present, equipment and personnel are being mobilised at the wind farm site, and topographical surveys of the area are being carried out,” KMG reported.
The ‘Mirny’ project, located in south-eastern Kazakhstan, is expected to generate up to 100 TWh of electricity over 25 years, which is sufficient to meet the needs of around 1 million people. The electricity generated will be supplied to the state under a long-term agreement signed in 2023.
The total investment in the project is estimated at $1.2 billion, with around three-quarters of the funding to be provided by external sources.
