French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed temporarily relaxing certain EU fuel standards in order to increase market supply and bring down prices.
According to Report, citing BFMTV, Macron has put forward this proposal to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
In particular, the French leader proposed, on an exceptional and temporary basis, to relax the EU’s current fuel quality requirements. In his view, this would enable oil refineries to increase production volumes.
Furthermore, Macron called for a relaxation of restrictions on the proportion of biofuel in the fuel blend. As BFMTV notes, this could help increase the supply of diesel on the market.
According to the television channel, the French president’s proposals are aimed at reducing fuel prices in the short term.
On 20 September, the average price of diesel in France reached €2.41 per litre, a record high. Macron had previously also stated the need to implement all possible measures at European level to reduce energy prices and increase oil refining capacity.
