The second round of presidential elections in Slovakia will be held on Saturday.

According to the country’s statistical office, there are more than 4.33 million people eligible to vote in the elections, for which 5.9 thousand polling stations will be opened.

The two favourites of the first round will compete for the presidency: Peter Pellegrini, speaker of the Slovak parliament and candidate of the Glas party, part of the ruling coalition, and Ivan Korchok, former head of the Slovak Foreign Ministry.

Korchok, who represents the liberal opposition, received the support of 42.5% of voters in the first round held two weeks ago. Contrary to forecasts, he managed to gain the upper hand against Pellegrini, whose victory was predicted and who eventually came second with 37% of the vote.

The winner of the second round will take over the presidency of Slovakia for a five-year term, replacing the first female president in the country’s history, Zuzana Čaputova, who has held the post since 2019 and decided not to run in the current election.
