Britain may withdraw from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) if it helps stop the flow of illegal migrants.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made this statement in an interview with The Sun newspaper, the Report reported, citing “Kommersant”.
Sunak commented on the ECHR ruling, which led to the cancellation of the first flight from Great Britain to Rwanda scheduled for the summer of 2022 with illegal immigrants on board a few minutes before take-off.
“I believe that securing borders and controlling illegal immigration is more important than becoming a member of any foreign court, as it is fundamental to our sovereignty,” Sunak said.
The publication notes that this is the first time in the unfinished year and a half of Rishi Sunak’s premiership that he has made a statement about the possibility of cancelling the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), which has been in force since 1953. His predecessor, Boris Johnson, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2019 to 2022, also suggested that the ECHR could be abrogated. Johnson pointed out that the main goal of British immigration policy is to combat criminal groups that bring people across the English Channel and put their lives at risk.
On 14 June 2022, the British authorities had to cancel at the last minute the departure of the first plane carrying illegal immigrants to Rwanda, which had agreed to accept asylum seekers deported from the United Kingdom. This was due to a decision by the ECHR at the request of various British human rights organisations.
In January 2024, the British House of Commons approved a bill allowing London to deport illegal immigrants to Rwanda. The initiative envisages that illegal migrants will have to await the outcome of their asylum application in the United Kingdom in this African country.
