Germany’s conservative CDU/CSU alliance and the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) signed a coalition agreement on Monday, paving the way for the formation of a new federal government.
Under the coalition protocol, finalized in April after weeks of negotiations, the parties pledged to boost Germany’s economic competitiveness, strengthen national defense and tighten immigration policies. The CDU/CSU is a political alliance of Germany’s two conservative parties, informally known as the “Union parties”. The Bundestag will elect CDU leader Friedrich Merz as chancellor on Tuesday. After Merz’s election, his government will officially take office and the administration led by current Chancellor Olaf Scholz will end. Speaking at the press conference held before the signing ceremony, Merz stated that the new government will move Germany forward with reforms and investments. Merz emphasized that the government will start reforms from day one, build the necessary infrastructure and make strong contributions to Europe. “I am confident that from tomorrow we will lead our country with strength, planning and confidence,” he said.
