Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Guyana’s Foreign Minister Hugh Todd agreed in Beijing to further enhance trade and investment ties between the two countries. They called for stronger cooperation to ensure the steady growth of China-Guyana relations.
Guyana was the first English-speaking Caribbean country to establish diplomatic relations with China and is now China’s largest trading partner in the region. Minister Wang Yi reiterated China’s support for Guyana’s independent development path and emphasized the need for more high-quality cooperation under the Belt and Road initiative. He suggested deepening partnerships in areas such as energy, mining, agriculture, fisheries, manufacturing and infrastructure, and emphasized the importance of exploring new areas of cooperation such as digital and green economy. Wang said Chinese companies will be encouraged to invest in Guyana, which will contribute to Guyana’s industrial modernization and economic independence. Wang also stressed that China’s development process is not based on colonialism or geopolitical calculations, and China will continue to advocate international justice and equity with small and medium-sized developing countries. He expressed China’s determination to safeguard the centrality of the United Nations and the basic norms of international relations together with countries in the Southern Hemisphere.
