China responds with tariffs on US products

Immediately after US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Chinese products, China imposed additional duties on some US imports and announced a competition investigation against Google. China announced retaliatory tariffs of 15% on coal and liquefied natural gas and 10% on crude oil, agricultural machinery and large motor vehicles. The new duties will take effect on Monday. China’s State Council Customs Tax Commission said in a statement that the US unilateral tariff increase seriously violates World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. Beijing also appealed to the WTO, requesting consultations on the tariffs. In addition, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation announced an investigation into Google. China’s State Administration for Market Regulation said on Tuesday it was investigating Google on suspicion of violating antitrust laws. The announcement did not mention tariffs, but came just minutes after Trump’s 10% tariffs on China went into effect. It remains unclear how the investigation will affect Google’s operations.
