On 17 July, the European Commission presented a plan to almost double the level of electrification of the EU economy by 2040, with a view to reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports.
According to the European bureau of Report, this was announced by Dan Jørgensen, the European Commissioner for Energy, at a press conference in Brussels.
He said the new proposals also aim to reduce energy bills in the EU and boost the competitiveness of European industry.
Currently, electricity accounts for around 23 per cent of the EU’s final energy consumption. Brussels intends to increase this figure to approximately 46 per cent by 2040 by encouraging households, transport and industry to switch to electric technologies.
“We must replace expensive, polluting fossil fuel molecules with cheap, clean and domestically produced electrons,” said Dan Jørgensen, presenting the Electrification Action Plan.
According to him, the recent rise in energy prices following tensions in the Strait of Hormuz has highlighted Europe’s vulnerability. Since the closure of the strait, the EU has paid over €50 billion more for energy without receiving any additional supplies.
