According to Report’s Balkan bureau, this was announced by Serbia’s Minister for Mining and Energy, Dubravka Jedović-Khandanović, at a seminar on the role and responsibilities of the National Authority for the Implementation of the Nuclear Energy Programme (NEPIO).
She noted that the aim is to complete the first phase of the nuclear programme by the middle of next year and to begin construction of the first nuclear facility by 2035.
The Minister emphasised that Serbia is developing its nuclear programme responsibly and in stages, in accordance with the standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
“By the middle of next year, we will have all the necessary information to make an informed decision regarding the further development of the nuclear programme. By 2032, we will be fully prepared – institutionally, regulatorily and professionally – to select the technology and begin the construction process, so that we can start building by 2035,” said Jedović-Handanović.
