Spain has decided to extend border controls by two weeks for passengers entering the country by sea or air from Italy.
According to Report, this has been reported by the Italian media, citing sources within the Spanish Ministry of the Interior.
It is noted that this decision was taken following receipt of official notification from Italy regarding a 15-day extension of the suspension of the Schengen Agreement in relation to Spain.
The controls, introduced on 8 August for an initial period of one month, have been extended for a further 15 days on a reciprocal basis – as emphasised – in accordance with a decision taken by the Italian government.
The Italian Government intends to notify the European Commission of its decision in the near future. The restrictions are provisionally set to remain in place until mid-September, although this period may be amended ‘depending on certain security checks that are yet to be carried out’.
It should be noted that Italy had previously decided to suspend the Schengen Agreement against the backdrop of the crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, where tens of thousands of migrants from Morocco arrived at the end of July.
