German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for reforms to the EU’s budgetary system, describing it as outdated.

According to Report, this was reported by Reuters.

In his view, a more streamlined approach to funding is needed, prioritising investment in defence and boosting the EU’s competitiveness.

“We need simplified structures, investment in competitiveness and defence, and a focus of European funds on European policy, as resources are limited,” he added.

According to Reuters, Mertz’s statement reflects growing disagreements over the EU budget for 2028–2034, where demands to increase security spending clash with the interests of traditional funding recipients – agriculture and regional development programmes.

In April, the European Parliament voted to increase the budget beyond the level previously proposed by the European Commission, setting the stage for conflict with member states unwilling to increase their contributions.
