Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili met with President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Theodoros Rousopoulos, who is in Budapest on the sidelines of the Conference of the Speakers of the Parliaments of the European Union and Partner States. During the meeting, Papuashvili briefed on current political developments in Georgia and preparations for the upcoming local elections. They also discussed the situation in the context of the resolution adopted in January, which led to the withdrawal of the Georgian parliamentary delegation from PACE. Mr. Papuashvili reaffirmed Georgia’s commitment to the fundamental principles and values of the Council of Europe. Emphasizing that respect for the will of the people is an indispensable element of democracy, Papuashvili described the disregard of this principle as unacceptable. Both sides expressed their desire to continue constructive dialogue.
