Thailand and Indonesia announced that they have upgraded their bilateral relations to the level of strategic partnership. The leaders of the two countries agreed to deepen cooperation in areas of common interest at the bilateral and regional levels.
The announcement was made during Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s official visit to Bangkok at the invitation of Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. The visit also coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Indonesia. “The upgrade of our relations to strategic partnership is a demonstration of our determination to strengthen our cooperation on issues of common interest to our peoples,” Prime Minister Shinawatra said in a statement. During the visit, the leaders of the two countries also held the first meeting of a new bilateral mechanism called the “Leaders’ Consultative Meeting”. This mechanism aims to hold regular talks at the level of heads of state. The two sides agreed to enhance cooperation between the armed forces and law enforcement agencies of Thailand and Indonesia. In particular, they agreed to cooperate more closely in combating common security threats such as drug trafficking and online fraud, and to explore the potential for partnership in the defense industry.
