Tokayev held talks with the UN Secretary-General in Almaty

Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who was visiting Almaty.

According to Akorda, the two talked about sustainable development. The president noted the importance of opening the first UN Regional Centre for Sustainable Development in Central Asia in Kazakhstan, calling it a significant step for the entire region. He expressed gratitude for the UN’s support for this initiative and reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s commitment to the principles of multilateralism, diplomacy and international cooperation.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also said that Kazakhstan supports the Secretary-General’s efforts to reform the UN and shares the priorities of the UN80 initiative.

Guterres praised the country’s contribution to strengthening international dialogue. He added that Kazakhstan is a ‘symbol of peace and dialogue,’ recalling its decision to renounce nuclear weapons, which has set an example for other states.

The parties discussed the prospects for the work of the Regional Centre for SDGs in Central Asia and Afghanistan, reform of the UN system, as well as current international and regional issues.
