The U.S. government has approved the sale of additional air-to-surface missiles and related equipment to Japan for approximately $39 million.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) informed Congress about the plan for the JASSM-ER extended-range standoff missiles on Wednesday.

Amid rising security challenges from China and North Korea, Japan has been enhancing its defense capabilities. These missiles allow for striking adversaries from outside their attack range.

In late 2022, Japan updated its defense strategy to include counterstrike capabilities, marking a significant shift under its war-renouncing Constitution.

The approval follows Japan’s request to purchase up to 16 of these missiles, according to DSCA.

“This sale will enhance the security of a major ally and support U.S. foreign policy goals in the Indo-Pacific region,” DSCA stated.
