The European Commission has approved the first phase of defence funding for eight EU member states under the SAFE militarisation programme.
According to Report, this is stated in a press release on the EC website.
“The European Commission has approved the national defence plans of eight member states, which is an important step in Europe’s efforts to strengthen its security. The Commission has submitted a proposal to the [EU] Council to approve financial assistance for Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Spain, Croatia, Cyprus, Portugal and Romania,” the press release states.
It is specified that the funding consists of long-term loans totalling approximately €38 billion as a result of the signing of agreements.
According to the statement, the measures ‘will enable these countries to urgently increase their military readiness and acquire the necessary modern military equipment,’ as well as contribute to Ukraine’s integration into the ‘EU security ecosystem.’
