Australia and the European Union concluded a defence and security partnership agreement that entered into force immediately upon signing. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the development.

According to Albanese, the document is aimed at strengthening joint work in the fields of cybersecurity, counterterrorism, and protection against hybrid threats. The arrangements reached include broader intelligence sharing, developing joint capacity to respond to emerging threats, and enhanced coordination in countering online radicalization and the financing of terrorist activities. In addition, both sides decided to launch a new dialogue in the field of space security.

Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles stated that the partnership concluded will open additional prospects in the sphere of arms and military equipment acquisition. He emphasized that the agreement will give Australian enterprises working in defence technology and innovation the opportunity to build closer ties with European partners and lay the foundation for developing the country’s defence industry.
