Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Mainl-Reisinger said she is open to public discussion about the future of Austrian security policy, noting that a discussion about the country’s NATO membership could be ‘very fruitful.’

According to Report, she said this in an interview with the Welt am Sonntag newspaper.

‘One thing is clear: neutrality alone will not protect us,’ she said. According to her, the security situation is becoming increasingly uncertain, and Russia is becoming more aggressive. “Austria is protected by investments in defence and in partnerships. I am fundamentally open to public discussion about the future of Austrian security and defence policy,” Maynle-Reisinger said.

At the same time, she pointed out that although ‘there is currently no majority in favour of NATO membership in parliament or among the population, such a discussion could nevertheless be very fruitful.’ ‘It’s not that I want to join NATO triumphantly. But we cannot sit idly by and say: if we don’t harm anyone, no one will harm us. That would be naive,’ the foreign minister stressed, adding that the world has changed.
