The European Union is preparing several options for securing Ukraine’s membership in the bloc, which is planned to be included in a future peace agreement.

According to Report, this was reported by Bloomberg, citing sources.

‘Among the options being considered is that Kyiv immediately receives protection and immediate access to some of the rights granted to members of the union. At the same time, the bloc will provide Ukraine with clear deadlines for completing the necessary steps to implement the formal procedure,’ sources told the publication.

Other options suggest that Ukraine’s existing EU accession process will continue, or that a transition period will be appointed, or that a gradual process of Kiev’s accession to the union will be organised.

A European Commission representative told Bloomberg that Ukraine’s accession to the EU is part of the discussions on a peace agreement to end the Russian-Ukrainian war. And now the European Union is ‘strengthening close ties with candidate countries’ ahead of their accession to the bloc.

The publication recalls that Ukraine’s 20-point peace plan envisages its accession to the EU in 2027, with Kyiv receiving some membership benefits during the interim period.

In December 2025, information emerged that Ukraine would join the European Union by 1 January 2027 if a peace agreement was concluded and the war ended.
