Strengthening strategic partnerships with Central Asian countries is a key priority of Georgia’s foreign policy, Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili said following talks with her counterparts from the region.

Speaking at a press conference during a visit to Georgia by the foreign ministers of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, Bochorishvili highlighted transport connectivity and the development of the Middle Corridor as shared strategic interests.

“Today, developing the Middle Corridor is particularly important. This route connects Central Asia, the South Caucasus and Europe via the Black Sea,” she said. “Georgia has an important role in developing this connection and expanding transport capacity, and realizing the Middle Corridor’s full potential is our shared strategic interest.”

Bochorishvili also outlined recent steps to strengthen bilateral relations. She said Georgia established a strategic partnership with Kazakhstan in June and with Uzbekistan in July, during the Uzbek president’s state visit to Georgia.

The Turkmen president’s state visit in July also created new opportunities to deepen political dialogue and expand trade and economic cooperation, she added

Turning to Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, Bochorishvili highlighted the Georgian prime minister’s first official visit to Kyrgyzstan in June, as well as meetings in Tajikistan.
