China has reacted strongly to the US veto of a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and an end to restrictions on humanitarian aid. China’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Fu Cong, condemned the US veto, saying that this stance had extinguished the last glimmer of hope for the people of Gaza.
“The US has once again abused its veto power, leaving over 2 million people in Gaza in the dark. The international community must question this stance,” Fu said, emphasizing that the resolution reflected the most urgent needs of the people of Gaza and the collective voice of the global community. Fu noted that the Security Council had been working toward a ceasefire in Gaza for a long time, but that the United States’ consistent obstructionist stance was the fundamental reason why the conflict could not be ended. He also pointed out that many decisions previously adopted by the Council have not been effectively implemented due to the protection provided by Washington to Israel. Rejecting the US claim that the Security Council’s action during this period would undermine diplomatic efforts, the Chinese representative said, “If there are sincere diplomatic efforts toward peace, the Council’s actions can only support these efforts.”
