Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that relations between China and the United States are at a critical juncture, emphasizing the importance of continuing dialogue and increasing cooperation between the two countries. Wang made the remarks during a meeting with China’s new US Ambassador David Perdue in Beijing on Tuesday.
The meeting, which took place about three weeks after Perdue, who took office in mid-May, arrived in Beijing, was seen as a sign of stability and cooperation between the two countries following recent tensions. Wang Yi said that they expect Perdue to play an “active role” in the “healthy, stable, and sustainable” development of relations between the two countries. Referring to the recent economic and trade talks in Geneva, Wang emphasized that China had “sincerely and meticulously” implemented the agreement reached by both sides. However, Wang said that the US had subsequently taken some negative steps “without justification,” adding that these steps violated China’s legitimate rights and interests and that Beijing was firmly opposed to such practices.
