Estonian President Alar Karis on Monday approved a law terminating the legal aid agreement with Russia.
According to Report, this decision was announced by the head of state’s office.
The explanatory note to the law states that bilateral relations between Estonia and Russia should be preserved only to the extent necessary. At the same time, the possibility of cooperation with Russia in civil, family and criminal cases will be preserved, and in the future, the rules of private international law and international conventions will be used to resolve them.
On 20 March, the Estonian parliament approved the draft law on the termination of the agreement with Russia, submitted by the government.
The legal aid agreement was signed in Moscow in 1993 and entered into force on 19 March 1995, with automatic renewal every five years. To terminate the treaty, the other party must be notified at least six months before the expiry of the five-year term of the treaty.
The current five-year term will expire on 18 March 2025. Therefore, the termination note must be sent to Russia by 18 September 2024.
