South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala have agreed to further expand economic cooperation between the two countries following the signing of a nuclear power plant agreement. During their first official telephone conversation on Wednesday, the leaders emphasized that the agreement would open a new chapter in relations between the two countries.

According to a statement by presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung, the parties expressed their intention to pursue comprehensive cooperation not only in the field of nuclear energy but also in high technology, infrastructure, and the energy sector in general. South Korea’s state-owned energy company Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. signed the final contract on June 4 to build two new reactors at the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant in the Czech Republic. With the agreement, which had previously been suspended by a court ruling, now in effect, this project marks South Korea’s first major international nuclear energy contract since the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates in 2009. The total value of the agreement is reported to be approximately 26 trillion won (18.6 billion dollars).
