Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba arrived in Canada on Sunday to begin preparations for the G7 Summit, which he will attend in person for the first time. A critical bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump focused on customs tariffs is expected to take place on Monday as part of the summit.
The two-day summit, which will begin on Monday in the Canadian town of Kananaskis, will take place against the backdrop of numerous bilateral and global issues, ranging from the global impact of the tariffs imposed by Trump under his “America First” policy to the rising tensions in the Middle East following Israel’s recent attack on Iran. Speaking to journalists before the summit, Ishiba said, “It is of great importance for the G7 to maintain its unity in the face of such challenges.” As the leader of the only Asian country participating in the G7, Ishiba said he would bring up the situation in the Indo-Pacific region and highlight the G7’s role in maintaining peace and stability from Ukraine to the Middle East, and from Asia to Europe.
