Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba will visit the Netherlands for a three-day trip starting on Tuesday with the aim of deepening cooperation with NATO. The Japanese government announced on Friday that the visit will take place as part of the NATO Summit. This visit marks the fourth consecutive time that a sitting Japanese prime minister has attended the NATO Summit. Although Japan is not a member of NATO, it is recognized as one of the Alliance’s partners in the Indo-Pacific region. Prime Minister Ishiba is expected to hold bilateral talks with leaders of NATO member countries and representatives of other partner countries during the summit in The Hague. The announcement was made by Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi. US President Donald Trump is also expected to attend the two-day summit, which begins on Tuesday. Cabinet Secretary Hayashi said, “Considering the serious security environment we face and based on the shared view that the security of the European-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions are inseparable, Japan and other partners in the region will discuss concrete ways to cooperate with NATO.”
