The National Assembly (Parliament) of Hungary has passed a resolution rejecting Ukraine’s accession to the European Union and further support for the country.

According to Report, this was announced on social media by Zoltán Kovács, State Secretary for International Communications and Relations in the Office of the Hungarian Prime Minister.

The resolution was supported by 142 MPs, with 28 voting against and four abstaining.

‘The resolution calls on the Hungarian government not to support the start of substantive negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU,’ he said.

He noted that the country is against Ukraine’s accession to the EU because the country is at war and its admission could lead to the European Union becoming a direct party to the conflict.

Kovács stressed that lawmakers also warned of the financial consequences of continuing to support Ukraine, noting that the EU has already provided €193.3 billion in aid since the start of the war.
