Russian Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Minsk is the most suitable place for a possible trilateral summit between US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Peskov said Minsk could host the talks on a neutral ground.

“Minsk is the best place for such talks. It is an ideal place to host such a meeting because of its geographical location and neutrality.” He also recalled that Minsk had previously hosted similar international talks and successfully concluded them. A possible summit between the United States, Russia and Ukraine is particularly important for ending the conflict in eastern Ukraine and stabilizing the region. It is thought that the talks between the three leaders could contribute to the resolution of the long-standing crisis. Ukrainian President Zelenskiy had previously stated that he was ready for direct talks with Russia. US President Trump, on the other hand, has expressed his willingness to play a mediating role in resolving the Ukrainian crisis. The Kremlin’s suggestion of Minsk for the summit once again highlights Belarus’ role in regional diplomacy. Minsk has previously hosted talks on the Ukrainian crisis and brokered the signing of a series of agreements known as the “Minsk Agreements”. It is not yet clear if and when the trilateral summit will take place. However, a dialog between the parties has the potential to ease tensions in the region.
