For the first time in its history, Kyrgyzstan has been elected as a member of the UN Security Council for the period 2027–2028.
This was announced by the President of Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Japarov, whilst addressing the UN General Assembly.
“The support of 142 states not only confirms Kyrgyzstan’s readiness to contribute to international affairs, but also testifies to the growing role of Central Asia in international relations,” said Japarov.
According to him, membership of the Security Council is not a privilege or a reward for Kyrgyzstan, but a great responsibility.
“Kyrgyzstan firmly adheres to international law, justice and the protection of human rights, and supports a multilateral system based on mutual respect, a balance of interests and responsibility towards future generations,” the President noted.
Zaparov also spoke of the need to reform the UN Security Council.
He proposed granting Africa two permanent seats on the Security Council and Latin America one permanent seat, noting that Africa’s population exceeds one billion people.
He added that consideration should also be given to applications from certain developed countries wishing to become members of the Security Council.
