Lithuania and Poland have begun drawing up a joint plan for the evacuation of the population across the state border in emergency situations.
According to Report, this was announced by Poland’s Minister of the Interior and Administration, Marcin Kerwinski, at a joint press conference with his Lithuanian counterpart, Martynas Katelinas.
“We discussed what needs to be done to establish alternative border crossing points in the event of extreme situations and to organise reception centres for evacuees,” he said.
According to Kerwinski, existing arrangements need to be updated. “The existing plans need to be coordinated and updated, including from a territorial perspective, and border-crossing procedures need to be standardised,” he noted.
For his part, Katelinas stated that, in an emergency, the route of retreat to Europe for residents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia would be the same. “We will be left with a single corridor – via Poland,” he believes.
