French President Emmanuel Macron held telephone talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. In a statement on social media, he called the safety and return of French citizens Selil Kohler and Jacques Pari, who are currently at the French embassy, an absolute priority.
Macron stressed the need for Iran to immediately cease its attacks on countries in the region and demanded that freedom of navigation be guaranteed by ending the de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The French leader reiterated his deep concern about the development of Iran’s nuclear and missile programmes, as well as all of Tehran’s activities aimed at destabilising the region, which he called the cause of the current crisis.
According to Macron, a diplomatic solution is now more necessary than ever to de-escalate the situation and preserve peace. During the conversation, the parties agreed to continue contacts in the future.
On 6 March, Pezeshkian held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Russian leader stressed that the parties must urgently stop the fighting and abandon the use of force to resolve problems in the Middle East. Pezeshkian thanked Russia for its support of the Iranian people and discussed developments in the conflict with the United States and Israel.
On 28 February, the United States and Israel launched a military operation against Iran. On the first day of hostilities, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Secretary of the Defence Council Admiral Ali Shamkhani and Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh were killed. In response, Tehran began striking American bases in the Middle East and Israeli territory.
