Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev stated that he had proposed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that they carry out a joint project to build the Belene nuclear power station with funding from the European Union.

According to Report, citing BNR News, the head of the Bulgarian government made this announcement during a parliamentary question-and-answer session.

According to Radev, should the project go ahead, the electricity generated by the nuclear power station would be supplied to Ukraine via Romania.

The Prime Minister also emphasised that Sofia would oppose the European Union’s proposed 21st package of sanctions against Russia if Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and Lukoil founder Vagit Alekperov were not removed from the sanctions list. He justified this move by citing the need to protect Bulgaria’s energy interests.
