Against the background of a large-scale transformation of Uzbekistan’s foreign policy course, the republic under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev is confidently moving towards deeper integration into the global economy. Consistently implemented policy of reforms and openness has allowed the country to reach a new level of international interaction and gain the support of leading partners around the world.
One of the priorities of this strategic line was the renewed efforts to join the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Despite the fact that negotiations on accession began back in 1994, it was during Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s presidency that this process became systematic, purposeful and practically oriented. Thanks to the political will of the head of state, Uzbekistan for the first time began to take concrete steps towards rapprochement with the global trading system.
The recent visit of Azizbek Urunov, the Special Representative of the President on WTO issues, to Switzerland was a symbol of steady progress in this direction. As part of the visit, a Protocol on the completion of negotiations on market access was signed – another important step confirming Uzbekistan’s readiness for full membership in the organisation. Thus, the country joined the list of states that have completed bilateral negotiations, the number of which has now reached 25, including such countries as China, the United States and Turkey.
