Singapore reiterated its support for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict during a UN conference on Sep 22, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia. The country endorsed the outcome document, the “New York Declaration,” reaffirming that only a negotiated two-state solution can ensure lasting peace. Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan stated that Singapore will recognize Palestine once it has an effective government that acknowledges Israel’s right to exist and rejects terrorism. He also stressed opposition to unilateral annexations by Israel. Meanwhile, France announced it would recognize Palestine, following Britain, Canada, Australia, and Portugal, who did so a day earlier.
