The structure of the UN Security Council is outdated and needs reform, said Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, speaking at the plenary session of the Astana International Forum. According to Zakon.kz, the Kazakh president believes that the UN and the Security Council have hardly changed in the last 80 years, which undermines confidence in the organisation, and therefore the Security Council needs to be reformed.

“There is a big gap between the institutional structure created 80 years ago and the modern world. This undermines trust in the organisation and its effectiveness,” Tokayev said.

Astana supports the inclusion of representatives from other countries in the Security Council, he added.

Tokayev stressed that only a few countries make ‘crucial decisions’ that affect the lives of billions of people. According to him, the Security Council must meet modern requirements in order not to lose its relevance, and giant countries need to show their commitment to peace and security. Tokayev also said that ‘everyone must fully support the UN Charter,’ because only then will the countries participating in the organisation be able to restore confidence in the prestige of the UN.
