Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a telephone conversation with United States of America (USA) President Donald Trump. The call was announced on the official account of the Turkish Presidential Administration on the X social networking site. During the call, bilateral relations between Turkey and the United States as well as regional and global issues were discussed. President Erdoğan expressed his belief that the two countries will jointly and decisively advance their cooperation as allies in the new era.
Erdogan emphasized that regional and global developments require increased consultations between Turkey and the United States in all areas. He stated that Turkey supports President Trump’s decisive and direct initiatives to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. He also stated that Turkey has been striving for a just and sustainable peace since the beginning of the war and will continue its efforts in this direction. President Erdoğan emphasized the importance of the two countries working together to stabilize Syria, to make the new administration work and to lift the sanctions against Syria. He noted that these steps will allow Syrians to return safely to their homeland. Erdoğan stated that he expected the US to take steps in the fight against terrorism in the new period in line with Turkey’s interests. He stressed the importance of lifting CAATSA sanctions in order to improve cooperation between the two countries in the field of defense industry, to complete the F-16 procurement process and to make progress on Turkey’s re-joining the F-35 program. During the meeting, the goals of strengthening the strategic partnership between Turkey and the United States and deepening cooperation in line with the common interests of the two countries came to the fore. President Erdoğan once again emphasized that Turkey’s contributions to regional and global peace will continue and stated that increasing cooperation with the US will be beneficial for both countries.
