The UK government announced on Tuesday 100 new sanctions against Russia’s military, energy and financial sectors, as well as individuals and entities conducting information operations against Ukraine.
According to the statement, the sanctions aim to limit Russia’s war capacity and reduce its pressure on Ukraine. In addition, the UK announced that it was working to lower the $60 per barrel price ceiling on Russian oil in order to further restrict Russia’s energy revenues. On the same day, the European Union approved its 17th sanctions package against Russia. The EU’s move was seen as part of efforts to increase pressure on Moscow to secure a ceasefire in Ukraine. Reacting to the new sanctions, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said, “Russia will never submit to any ultimatum from any country.” Zakharova also said it was clear that Europe wanted to continue the conflict by rearming Ukraine.
